Fire Response and the Hidden Risk of Traffic Signals

When firefighters rush out to a fire, their movement is much like the military’s “five-minute standby”—no hesitation, no second thoughts, only the mission to save lives.

But there is a hidden problem: traffic signals.
Most fire stations use a priority signal system. When the emergency button is pressed, nearby traffic lights instantly switch to red, clearing the way for the fire truck.

The issue is that drivers are accustomed to the routine of green lights. Long familiarity builds habit, and habit blinds awareness. When a signal suddenly changes to red at an unexpected moment, many drivers simply do not see it—leading to accidents instead of prevention.

A simple solution could help: pre-alerts.
Instead of an immediate change, pressing the emergency button could first display a clear message such as “Fire Truck Departing—Prepare to Stop.” A few seconds of advance warning would break driver habit, focus attention, and save both rescuers and citizens from harm.

We cannot save an entire nation overnight. But addressing these small, overlooked weaknesses in our society—like a sore finger that hurts the whole body—is itself an honorable task.

화재출동시 소방관들 움직임은 흡사 군에서 경험한 5분대기와 크개 다르지 않다. 이저 저것 재는것 생각하는것 없이 오직 화재 잡아야 한다는 생각으로 달려 나간다.

근데 문제가 있다.

소방차 출동시 누군가 도로를 통제하고 차단해야 하는 일이 벌어 진다.

물론 우선신호교통시스템이 있다.

출동전 소방서 내부에 설치된 버튼을 누르면 도로변에 설치된 신호등이 소방차가 출동할 수 있게 다른 방향의 신호등을 적색으로 바꿔 차단을 한다.

문제는 여기에 있다.

맨날 녹색으로 운영되던 신호등이 갑자가 적색으로 바뀐다는 것이다.

사람들은 익숙함에 길들여 진다.

특히나 그 도로를 노상 이용하는 운전자는 더욱더 그렇다.

내가 늘 다녀봐서 참 알기 때문에 내 의식속에 복제된 세상이 기준이 된다.

그래서 신호등이 바뀐것이 안 보인다.

결국 사고로 이어진다.

이 문제 어찌 해야 하는가?

버튼을 누르면 바로 신호등이 바뀌지 않는다. 수초~수십초 후에 바뀐다.

그러 이때 신호등이 바뀌는 것과 별개로 예비 안내를 때려 주면 도움이 된다.

버튼을 누르면 지체없이 "소방차출동중"이라는 문구가 도로에서 운전자들이 알 수 있게 표출되는 것이다. 일종의 사전 예비 신호인 샘이다.

이리해서

소방관이 업무를 진행하는데 도움이 되고

목숨에 안전을 더해 줄 수 있다면

의미가 있는 것이다.

갑자기 나라를 구할 수는 없지만

사회에서 아픈 손톱같은 그런일들 하나하나

처리해 나가는것

그것도 참 장한 일이라 생각 한다.
